January 8, the local Colts will welcome the Bavarians to Borussia-Park Stadium. Football is full of surprises: good for some, bad for others. Who will celebrate the victory after all? We’ll find out on Friday.
Beating Bayer by two points, Gladbach finished last season in 4th place and received an opportunity to play in the Champions League.
The current season has been a bit stuttering for the club. In the past 5 games Marco Rose’s side gained only 6 points out of 15 possible. Ahead there are difficult matches against Bundesliga leaders – Bayern, Borussia Dortmund and unexpected upstart, Union Berlin.
Gladbach are sitting in the 7th spot of the league table, having 21 points total.
As for the Champions League, the club managed to advance to the playoffs, although they had rather tough group mates – Inter Milan, Shakhtar Donetsk, and Real Madrid. In the ⅛ finals, Rose’s men are set to face Manchester City, which means that the match is not going to be easy.
Hans-Dieter Flick’s squad is rightfully considered to be one of the strongest teams in Europe and probably worldwide as well. The Champions League and Europa League winners proved that they can handle anything and anyone. For the last 7 years the Bavarians remained irreplaceable leaders of the Bundesliga.
At present, Bayern are at the top of the standings, with 33 points after 14 games. However, it is too soon for the Reds to relax because the 2nd-placed RB Leipzig, the underdogs of last season’s Champions League, are breathing down their necks.
Flick’s side finished the Champions League group stage with a close-to-ideal result: 16 points out of 18 possible. Now, Bayern will have to meet Italian Lazio in the playoffs.
Considering the different levels of the clubs, Borussia MG are the outsiders of the upcoming match. Even despite playing at home, they are given the high odds of 4.94.
Bookies don’t believe that the hosts will be able to grab one point either. The odds on a draw – 4.78.
Good luck to both clubs!
