A spot in the DFB Pokal Final will be at stake when Werder Bremen take on RB Leipzig in the tournament semi-final on April 30. At first sight, the outcome may seem quite predictable as the opponents are of different levels. But is that really so? Let’s figure it out together.
The once formidable club from Bremen used to frequently perform in the Champions League in the 2000s. However, since the 2010s Werder had constantly been struggling and eventually dropped to the 14th spot of the Bundesliga standings. And it looks like the club may even be relegated to the second-tier division. But everything might change if they win the DFB Pokal, which of course is easier said than done, considering the upcoming rivals.
Until now, Werder were very lucky to have teams from lower divisions as their opponents. Thus, they were able to defeat Greuther (2-0) and Jahn Regensburg (0-1) from the 2. Bundesliga.
The upcoming match against RB Leipzig will show if Werder are worthy of playing in the final.
The runners-up to win the Bundesliga have their hopes revived after a 2-0 win over Stuttgart last week. Although the Red Bulls entered the top division fairly lately (in the 2016-17 season), they are considered to be a real threat for all top clubs in Germany, as well as outside of it.
As for their DFB Pokal journey, RB Leipzig beat the representatives of the 2. Bundesliga Vfl Bochum in the ⅛ finals (4-0) and advanced to the quarterfinals where they had to face Wolfsburg. Despite being in the top-3 of the Bundesliga clubs, the Wolves were defeated by the Red Bulls (2-0).
Bookies see Werder as the massive outsiders, giving the odds of 9.2 on their victory. A draw seems a little more likely, 1 to 5.2.
RB Leipzig are expected to book their place in the final and do so comfortably. The odds on Nagelsmann’s side are 1.35.
