Borussia Monchengladbach will take on their rivals Borussia Dortmund in the DFB-Pokal quarter-final on Tuesday, March 2. Similar names, but different styles and levels – which Borussia will turn out to be worthy of playing in the semi-finals? We’ll find out soon.
Last season Gladbach broke into the Champions League, having finished the Bundesliga in 4th place. However, this season their performance leaves much to be desired. The players will have to try really hard to get to the top-5, which will provide them with a pass to the European tournaments. Currently, Marco Rose’s side need to reduce a 6-point gap in order to climb up the standings.
As for the Champions League, a 2-0 defeat at home to Manchester City left Gladbach almost zero chances to advance to the quarter-finals of the competition. So, winning DFB-Pokal is the only way for Rose’s squad to play at least in the Europa League next season.
But the upcoming opponents are tough ones. Both sides have met 31 times at different tournaments. Borussia Dortmund dominated in their meetings, winning 21 matches. Meanwhile, Borussia M have won only 7 times. The other 3 games ended in stalemates. The clubs have met in the Bundesliga this season, with Gladbach managing a 4-2 win over Dortmund in January 2021.
Unlike their future rivals, Dortmund’s chances of progressing to the next stage of the Champions League are definitely stronger. They defeated Sevilla in the last-16 first leg, thus partially securing a spot in the quarter-finals.
Nevertheless, the club’s participation in the Champions League next season is doubtful. Terzic’s side have ceded their 2nd place in the Bundesliga standings to RB Leipzig. Will they be able to get it back, having 11 matches left to play in the domestic league? Another option is to win the Champions League this year.
The victory of the DFB-Pokal will allow Dortmund to compete in the Europa League.
Despite being the hosts, Gladbach have received the underdog card, with the odds of 3.13 on their victory. Given the form both sides are in, Borussia Dortmund are coming as favourites. They will try to meet bookies’ expectations and justify the odds of 2.23 on their success.
If you believe the clubs will end this match in a draw, you can bet on it for the odds of 1 to 3.7.
