Rumor has it that the English defender for La Liga club Atletico Madrid, Kieran Trippier is considering the change of the club. Where is he going to? Discussing Trippier’s future, let’s recall his football past.
Trippier is a graduate of Manchester City’s academy, where he progressed through the ranks and signed his first contract in 2007, at the age of 17. He played in the youth team, where he was a captain. In the 2007-08 season together with his team, Trippier won the FA Youth Cup by outplaying Chelsea academy (4-2).
Manchester City decided that the young talented player needed more practice and gave Trippier to Championship club Barnsley on a one-month loan. The footballer stayed at the club for the remainder of the season by his own choice.
The 2011 season started with the offer from Burnley, another Championship club that wanted the right-back and prepared a more beneficial contract. Trippier joined Burnley on a season-long loan. In December 2011, after impressing during his loan, Trippier was nominated for the Championship Player of the Month award. As his perspectives in Manchester City were rather vague, in January 2012 Trippier was signed by Burnley on a permanent deal. By the end of the year, Trippier received the Burnley Player of the Year award.
During his second season in Burnley, Kieran Trippier helped the club take the 2nd place in the Championship and get promoted to the Premier League. His contract was renewed for three more years, until 2017.
However, in 2015 Tottenham outbid Trippier and signed a 5-year contract with the right-back. Due to the competition inside the team, Trippier made his debut for the club only 4 months later, in October. In February the following year, he scored his first goal for Spurs in the match against Watford.
In July 2019, Kieran Trippier was signed by Atletico Madrid for a fee of £20mln.
Trippier confessed many times that he loved to perform for Atletico Madrid, as the experience he received while playing for this club was priceless. Nevertheless, let’s look at the stats.
In the 2019-20 season, he appeared in 31 games for Atletico (23 games were in La Liga, 6 – in the Champions League, 2 – in Copa del Rey). Frankly speaking, that’s not much for a top player. So, no wonder rumors began to circle that Trippier is looking for a new club.
As we can see from his biography, Kieran’s career is closely connected to English clubs. He is familiar with the English style of playing, and he knows most of the clubs in the Premier League and Championship. And last, but not least, it is good to be back home.
One of the possible places for Trippier is Sheffield United, although we believe it is unlikely. The odds on Sheffield are 12.
Leeds United (the odds – 10) are also in the list of possible Trippier’s employers. The club is ambitious enough to climb higher in the EPL table and needs skilled and experienced players to achieve that goal.
There is a small chance that Trippier will return to Burnley. Alhough the club will be definitely happy to accept him, the odds on Burnley are 3.6.
The most probable candidate on our list to sign Trippier is Aston Villa. The club barely avoided relegation last season. Jack Grealish, the captain of Aston Villa, expressed his desire to leave the club, so the spot of the leader will be vacant. Taking into account Lions’ difficulties in defence, Trippier would come in handy. The odds that Trippier will join Aston Villa are 2.
