Last Thursday, Liverpool secured their first league title in 30 years. They claimed the championship earlier, with 7 matches still to be contested.
Although Liverpool’s lead in the standings was absolutely stunning, Manchester City didn’t let them relax till last week. For the early title Liverpool need to thank Chelsea, who dramatically defeated ManCity at the home stadium (2:1). Let’s talk about that match!
Chelsea were the first to score. In the end of the 1st half Christian Pulisic put Chelsea into the lead after capitalising on a mistake from Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy. However, after the rest the Citizens levelled the score on the 55th minute, when Kevin De Bruyne made it 1-1 with a fantastic free-kick.
The decisive moment came 23 minutes later as Fernandinho of Manchester City handled the ball on the line while blocking a Chelsea shot. He was given a red card following a VAR review. Chelsea received an opportunity for a penalty which was successfully put into the back of the City net by Willian. As a result, 2:1 in favour of Chelsea!
Manchester City lost the necessary points, while Liverpool’s lead became unassailable.
It is interesting that Liverpool claimed the title with 7 matches left to play. Before, only Manchester United and Manchester City had managed to win the championship 5 rounds before the end of the season.
This is a great victory for Liverpool! Last time they won the Premier League was back in 1989-90. Then, the club was led by Kenny Dalglish. Since that season, the Reds never succeeded in the Premier League. The special praise goes to the manager of Liverpool Jurgen Klopp. He came to the club in 2015 and eventually turned it into title winners. For the past 5 years Liverpool won the UEFA Supercup, Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup and finally the English Premier League. That’s amazing!
However, we still have 7 interesting rounds to watch. The newly-crowned champions are visiting Manchester City on July 2. Many believe that the hosts will win, but we hope that Liverpool will be able to show tough character and prove their right for the new title. Our bet is on Liverpool’s victory for odds of 3.28.
